Third Avenue Bridge

Commuters woke up one morning and discovered a new Third Avenue Bridge. To minimize disruption to the flow of 72,000 vehicles that use it daily, Hardesty & Hanover, LLP Engineering fabricated the 3,500 square foot reconstruction, which included ramps, approach spans, and swing spans, off-site in Alabama in six phases and later barged it 1,800 miles to New York. MoMA

The paradoxical architecture of the 630,000-square-foot Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is so striking and well-executed, it disappears, and that’s exactly what architect Yoshio Taniguchi intended. The grand lobby, atrium space, and surfaces throughout the interior achieve a flatness and transparency with 20 different types of curtain wall to keep visitors focused solely on the artwork. 300 Madison Avenue

This 40-story, 1.2 million-square-foot skyscraper was already under construction when the events of September 11 forced architects to rethink the design. Its revisions included an imaginative curtain wall façade of stainless-steel spandrel panels and fins to meet post-9/11 security requirements and a structural steel core.
